Family Meets Jadhav 22 Months After Detention, Sits Across Glass Partition

The Pakistan Foreign Office released photos of Jadhav, who is on death row, meeting his family after a gap of 22 months.

According to a report by Geo News, Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif had said so.

India's Deputy High Commissioner J P Singh is also accompanying the family for the meeting.

In the video, Jadhav is apparently saying, "I requested a meeting with my wife and mother and I am thankful to Govt of Pakistan for this grand gesture".

Faisal also tweeted that the meeting was arranged in light of "Islamic traditions and based on purely humanitarian grounds".

Jadhav's wife and mother later left for the Indian High Commission before leaving for India. Jadhav's family is expected to leave Pakistan soon after the meeting. The communication between them was through an intercom device.

It was the first time that Jadhav was meeting his family since his arrest in March previous year, and Pakistan portrayed it as a humanitarian gesture to mark the birthday of the country's founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

The meeting started at around 1.35 pm and lasted about 45 minutes, after which the entire party re-emerged, and were driven away in a white SUV.

Pakistani officials insist Jadhav has confessed before the country's military court that he was tasked by the Indian intelligence agency "to plan, coordinate and organize espionage, terrorist and sabotage activities" against Pakistan.

He said the two women spoke "openly and had a productive meeting" with Jadhav. The video was shown during a press conference which followed immediately after the 30-minute meeting between Jadhav and family. It was an open meeting, we are looking forward to a statement from Jadhav's family, Kale added.

Pakistan had on December 20 issued visa to Jadhav's wife and mother to visit Islamabad to meet him.

Times of India cited Asif as saying that the reason the meeting is taking place is because Pakistan didn't want India to create the impression that Jadhav was denied access to his family, especially since the spy's case is now being heard at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav, a former officer in the Indian navy, was arrested in March 2016 in the Pakistan province of Baluchistan, where there has been a long-running conflict between national security forces and militant separatists. The ICJ halted his execution on India's appeal pending the final verdict by it.
