Officials say flu activity widespread in Kentucky

Pharmacy manager Angela Jaber administers an influenza shot Thursday to Rogelio Martinez at Walgreens. New Mexico's flu season is well underway although health officials don't know how bad it will

In 2016-2017, more than 70,000 flu cases were confirmed in Missouri, and the DHSS said, if the trend continues, the state could see more than that this season. "The highest number of flu-related hospitalizations has occurred among those who are older than 50 years of age, as well as children younger than 5, which are both groups at greater risk of experiencing severe illness and complications due to flu", the health department said in a statement on November 30.

Public health officials are seeing a spike in influenza cases across Montana.

The flu season total is now 1,646, compared to 451 at a similar point past year.

As a bonus, when you are vaccinated, you are contributing to the immunity of the "herd", meaning that the more members vaccinated the less the disease spreads and the greater the protection afforded to the younger and older members of the population.

So far this flu season, the health unit has confirmed 18 cases of influenza.

Illnesses at West Independent School District's elementary school caused the absentee rate to hit nearly 20 percent this week. That's double the amount as the same time past year.

Leyba said anyone who is feeling ill should not come to the hospital to visit a loved one being treated there and risk infecting the patient or others.

Respiratory infections, which can be caused by the flu, are spread through droplets containing the virus or bacteria when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

That means lots of people will be sick over the holidays; lots already are. They say a flu shot is the best way to prevent the virus.

Flu symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, congestion, runny nose, headaches, and fatigue. It also brings on the flu.

"It's still possible to get a flu shot, but it takes two weeks for the vaccine to be effective", Burton said.

Individuals and families without health insurance should check with their county health department to find out if local clinics will be held to provide free or low-priced vaccinations.

A vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months and older, especially pregnant women, the elderly and anyone with a weakened immune system.
