60 Pounds of Pot Was for Christmas Presents, Elderly Couple Says

Busted Elderly Couple Says 60 Pounds of Pot Was Meant for Christmas Presents

According to BDS Analytics, a marijuana industry research firm, Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington, all states where marijuana has been legalized or decriminalized, have seen a spike in pot sales around the holiday season.

An 80-year-old California man whose pickup truck contained 60 pounds of marijuana that he said was intended as Christmas gifts has been released from the York County Jail. They were pulled over earlier this week for crossing the center line without signaling.

When they stopped the vehicle, he said, deputies could immediately smell the strong odor of raw marijuana.

When cops in York, Nebraska, found high-grade marijuana in the back of a pickup truck they'd pulled over, the elderly couple transporting it had a pretty merry excuse: They just wanted to make everyone's Christmas a little greener. They told police they were traveling from California and meant to make stops in Boston, Mass. and Vermont to distribute the holiday cheer to family and friends. They were headed to Vermont. "'Christmas presents'" was the explanation, Lieutenant Paul Vrbka confirmed. Barbara was not arrested, but Patrick was.

Patrick Jiron, 83, and his wife, Barbara Jiron, 80, both of Clearlake Oaks, California, were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and no drug tax stamp.

When asked about the Jirons' custody status by the Washington Post, authorities simply replied, "they're not here".
