Israel remands Palestinian girl filmed slapping soldier in West Bank

Palestinian women hit IDF soldiers

The remand of 17-year-old Ahed Tamimi's mother, who was arrested on suspicion of assault and incitement, was also extended until Thursday.

According to father of Ahed, Bassem Tamimi, a large Israeli force raided the family home at dawn and arrested Ahed Tamimi while she was sleeping in her bed.

The video has been used by the Israeli army to prove to the world that their soldiers exercise restraint, but the women's arrest in the middle of the night has been criticized by Palestinian activists.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Israeli security forces arrested Tamimi at her home in Nabi Saleh for her role in Friday's incident. However, the servicemen did not oblige the girls, and refrained from retaliating throughout the encounter.

"This is what Israeli soldiers have to go through", The Israel Project captioned the footage.

The girls filmed the soldiers with cellphones, which seemed to indicate they were trying to instigate a violent response from the soldiers. The goal of these provocateurs, of course, is to elicit a violent response from the soldiers, which can then be used to further smear the Jewish state on the global stage.

The Israeli army spokesman said that the "commander acted professionally by not being dragged into violence".

Tamimi and two other teenage girls had filmed themselves hitting the soldiers, yelling at them and - at one point - slapping one of them across the face. Bennett noted that under Israeli law, attacking soldiers is punishable by up to seven years in jail.

He also revealed that Ahed's 14-year-old cousin, Mohammed, had also been hit in the face with a rubber bullet fired by Israeli soldiers days ago.

According to reports, the victim was shot at close range during demonstrations staged in the village of Nabi Saleh in the occupied West Bank.

In 2012, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan sat down for breakfast with Ahed who won the Turkish Handala Courage Award for challenging the Israeli troops in her village.

Though the video has been hailed by Tamimi's supporters as a fearless act in the struggle of the Palestinian people, the viral video has also been used by pro-Israel voices who instead saw the clash as a display of "IDF restraint and professionalism", the Post reported.
