Google Chrome will block some types of ads in February

Banned units include autoplay videos with automatic sound and prestitial countdown ads, which are full-page takeovers that activate before entering a site.

After announcing in June that Google planned to start blocking ads in Chrome at some point in early 2018, ads that violate the Better Ads Standards, Google has updated us today with an official date.

Google says that the goal of the program is to help publishers by weeding out bad ads across the internet, which could cut down on users with blanket ad blockers.

Earlier this year, Google announced plans to implement an in-browser ad blocker within Chrome.

Google's hope is that Chrome's built-in ad blocker - which it sees as a "natural evolution of pop-up blockers" - will reduce the use of the third-party blockers that hide all ads.

When the company joined the Coalition for Better Ads, it vowed to block those annoying ads. Google can also help you in their Ad Experience Report Help Forum.

The Ad Experience Report is a tool that provides screenshots and videos of annoying ad experiences to help sites find and fix issues. By doing this, Google will be able to root out "bad or aggressive" ads thanks to the guidelines that are put in place by the Coalition. The browser's ad blocker will be taking an all-or-nothing approach: All ads blocked if one ad doesn't follow the standards or all ads allowed if all the ads follow the standards. Google has noted in the past that ad blockers which do not discriminate hurt publishers that create free content and threaten "the sustainability of the web ecosystem". Come February 15, if your website has been flagged with a "failing" status in Google's Ad Experience Report for more than 30 days, they'll remove all ads from it. Google is in the business of serving ads, after all, so it only makes sense that they want to protect their lucrative revenue stream.
