U.S. vetoes United Nations vote on status of al-Quds

China calls for unity of int'l community over Jerusalem issue

The Muslim mayor of the Israeli city of Nazareth has now said that Christmas celebrations will be permitted following reports that they would be cancelled due to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision on Jerusalem

Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Monday expressed regret at the UN Security Council's failure to pass the Egypt-drafted resolution on Jerusalem due to the USA veto.

The Egyptian-drafted resolution did not specifically mention the USA or Trump but expressed "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem".

Trump's decision broke with decades of US policy and global consensus that Jerusalem's status must be left to Israeli-Palestinian talks, leading to harsh criticisms from Muslim countries and Israel's closest European allies, who have also rejected the move.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas the US should no longer be involved in brokering a Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, for his part, strongly attacked the United States and accused it of supporting Zionist work in Palestine since its inception.

"It is in line with previous Security Council resolutions, and we call on all parties to renew efforts in favour of a long and sustained and a sustainable peace in the Middle East".

The draft resolution was backed on Monday by the 14 other Security Council members, including many United States allies, highlighting Washington's increasing isolation over an issue that has triggered mass rallies in support of the Palestinians in major worldwide cities. "It won't be forgotten", she said, describing the measure as "one more example of the United Nations doing more harm than good in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict".

Explaining the negative vote, US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley said it had been done to protect her country's sovereignty and its right to choose where to have its embassy.

Speaking after the vote, Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations, said: "It is paradoxical that while we were waiting for a peace plan from the USA, the administration instead made a decision to further obstruct peace and delay its realisation".

Safronkov said Russian Federation will also "continue to encourage all Palestinian parties to overcome the internal rifts as quickly as possible".

The rare use of the U.S. veto to block the vote was not an embarrassment, Haley said, but should embarrass the other council members.

The resolution that was vetoed would have called on "all states to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the holy city of Jerusalem", citing a 1980 council resolution.

The resolution also called for reversing the "negative trends on the ground that are imperilling the two-State solution" for Arab-Israeli dispute.

And it would have called for intensified and accelerated worldwide and regional efforts to achieve Middle East peace.

"You lit a candle of truth".

Netanyahu compared Haley to the Maccabees, Jewish warriors commemorated during the current Jewish holiday of Hannukkah for revolting against Hellenic rulers, rededicating the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and establishing a Jewish Kingdom in Judea. One defeated the many.
