Akayed Ullah, 27, was identified as the suspected bomber who caused the explosion this morning, December 11, at Manhattan's Port Authority Bus Terminal, according to NYPD Commissioner John O'Neil.

Subway trains were bypassing the Port Authority and Times Square stations.

The suspect was taken to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition.

- The suspect wore an "improvised low-tech explosive device attached to his body".

A man suspected of being behind the blast was in custody, and suffered injuries, police said.

Preliminary information, according to two law enforcement sources, one local and one federal, indicates a pipe bomb may have unintentionally exploded.

The suspect, Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, was indicted last month on murder and terror-related charges, the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY said.

Several police cars staked out Ullah's Brooklyn residence as small pieces of the suspect's life began to surface.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said: "This was attempted terrorist attack", adding that there was no additional threat at this time.

The suspect in an attempted terror attack near Times Square told investigators that he timed the assault to coincide with the Christmas season for the greatest possible impact - lashing out in the name of the Islamic State, a law enforcement official said Monday.

- Alan Butrico owns a residential building next door to the building where he says Ullah and his family live. Service should return to normal before evening rush hour, transit officials said. The NYPD said that in the city's subway system, "The A, C and E line are being evacuated at this time".

The weapon used in Monday's attack was "amateur-level", New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a news conference near the explosion site.

"I heard boom and saw smoke and we all started running up the steps", Bethea said.

Since the terror attacks of 9/11, several attacks have rocked NY.

A man was charged with killing eight people and injuring a dozen others as he drove a pickup truck down a bicycle path near the World Trade Center on Halloween.
