Google Assistant now out for Android Lollipop 5.0 phones, Android tablets

Though older phones are getting the smart digital helper, tablets getting Google Assistant are, for now, limited to those running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or later. Google plans to expand its assistant's reach by bringing the Google Assistant to more Android devices. Other countries receiving the update include Italy, Japan, Germany, Brazil and Korea. You'll soon be able to find it on any tablet running Android Marshmallow or Android Nougat. If you decide to do so, you will see the Google Assistant app icon on your "All apps" list. Older phone owners were stuck with upgrading or going Assistant-less. With the Google Assistant, the user can make phone calls, send text messages, set reminders, set alarm, and many more. Just those that are running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or later (Nougat and Oreo).

It may now respond to the Google Assistant. For now, only the Android tablet users in the USA will receive the feature.

Google Assistant was first announced at Google I/O a year ago as the search giant's answer to Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana and Amazon's Alexa.

Google also release the Google Assistant Go, the lite app for the Android Oreo (Go edition) powered smartphones. Android Lollipop users in the US, UK, India, Australia, Canada and Singapore, Mexico, and Spain will receive the update. Tablet users are said to represent 53.1% of users.

Now, for the 26% of Android device users (according to the latest platform distribution figures from Google) who are stuck on Android 5, and those who have tablets, things are about to change.
