Heisman Trophy finalists from left Lamar Jackson Bryce Love and Baker
Mayfield woncollege football's most prestigious individual honor in a landslide over runner-up Bryce Love of Stanford and last year's Heisman victor, Lamar Jackson of Louisville.
He sits atop the FBS record books with a career passing efficiency rating of 176.03, which is narrowly ahead of 2008 Heisman Trophy victor Sam Bradford's 175.62; Bradford also played QB at OU. Along with the Heisman, Mayfield also won the Walter Camp, Maxwell and Davey O'Brien Awards. As Mayfield's play was consistently dominant down the stretch and the other candidates fell off the pack, Mayfield emerged as the leader.
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield accepted the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night with a gracious and emotional speech at the PlayStation Theater in New York City. He also has 310 yards and five touchdowns as a runner.
The enigmatic Sooners signal-caller threw for 4340 yards and 41 touchdowns while completing 71 percent of his passes. He did this all despite losing head coach Bob Stoops, Heisman finalist receiver Dede Westbrook and thousand-yard runners Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon from last year's team.
Mayfield still has some unfinished business to attend to this season.
Mayfield led the Sooners to a 12-1 record and a spot in the college football playoff as they will take on Georgia in the Rose Bowl. He finished fourth in the Heisman balloting in 2015 and third a year ago.
