"I had a constructive and open discussion with President Poroshenko on Ukraine's efforts to fight corruption", Lagarde said in a statement.

Nika Melia, Chairman of UNM's Political Council, who addressed the rally first, told the protesters that the party and its leader were engaged in "a struggle for better future, for freedom and for maintaining independence".

Ukrainian authorities this week have faced accusations of deliberately sabotaging anti-corruption reforms, which are a key condition for global support for the country as it grapples with a Russian-backed separatist insurgency.

Action by parliament and prosecutors against existing anti-corruption institutions such as the NABU investigative bureau also provoked a wave of criticism this week from reformists in Ukraine and its foreign backers, including the International Monetary Fund.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says he has not interfered in the work of state anticorruption agencies, comments that come amid mounting domestic and foreign pressure over Kyiv's commitment to combating graft.

Poroshenko vowed Saakashvili would be given a fair trial.

Saakashvili's extraordinary energy and strong charisma took him to the forefront of the 2003 Rose Revolution that forced out the government in his native Georgia.

"If he flees from the investigation, this undermines his credibility", he added.

Mikheil Saakashvili, the former president of Georgia, was arrested on Friday in Ukraine during a late-night police raid on an apartment where he had been sheltering after his escape from custody following a rooftop struggle with security agents this week.

Saakashvili rejects the allegations, pointing to his long record of opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
