Nassar sentenced to 60 years for possessing child porn

McKayla Maroney believes ex-doctor Larry Nassar should spend the rest of his life behind bars

Not Released

Maroney's teammates on that Olympic team, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas, have also accused Nassar of sexual abuse.

Three former US Olympians have accused him of sexual abuse under the guise of medical treatment.

Olympic gymnastics gold medallist McKayla Maroney says the former USA team doctor facing child porn and sexual assault charges "deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison".

While expressing gratitude to the federal prosecutors and the judge for the sentence handed down, Denhollander said, "Today the justice feels very incomplete".

Investigators found more than 37,000 images of child porn on Nassar's electronic devices in 2016. In her victim statement, Maroney said that she believes Nassar should spend the rest of his life in prison.

The charges relate to Nassar's time a faculty member at Michigan State University, from 1997 to 2016, when, the university said, he was sacked after the allegations surfaced.

"I didn't know anything differently", she said. "Because the National Team training camps did not allow parents to be present, my mom and dad were unable to observe what Nassar was doing, and this has imposed a awful and undeserved burden of guilt on my loving family".

More than 100 women and girls are suing Nassar in civil court.

Her mother also wrote to the MI judge. "She has transformed from a bubbly, positive, loving, world class athlete into a young adult who was deeply depressed, at times suicidal".

"He abused my trust, abused my body and left scars on my psyche that may never heal", McKayla told the court in her letter. "At times, I was unsure whether I would open her bedroom door and find her dead".

A former elite sports doctor whose sexual assault cases have rocked Michigan State University and the group that trains U.S. Olympic gymnasts was sentenced Thursday to 60 years in federal prison for possessing thousands of images of child pornography.

Maroney's parents are still haunted by the times McKayla was supposed to be under the protection of USA Gymnastics and her coaches, and yet was left unsupervised, giving Nassar easy access to perform his pseudo-treatments on her. Nassar has admitted to molesting girls in his care when they sought treatment with him. Michigan State declined to comment.

Michigan State has commissioned an internal review of how university employees responded to suspicions about Nassar, but had planned to keep that review confidential, drawing criticism from victims and their attorneys. In both cases, plea deals dictate a minimum sentence of 25 to 40 years and a maximum of life in prison, the State Journal reports.
