Trump Tweets Skepticism of Deal With Democrats to Keep Government Open

Top Democrats pull out of White House meeting after Trump tweet

Can Republicans avoid having a government shutdown pinned on them

Trump was scheduled to meet with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Tuesday, but they canceled their meeting with the president after he tweeted that he didn't "see a deal" coming together as a result of the meeting with Democrats.

US President Donald Trump pledged to "take care" of North Korea after its latest ballistic missile launch -the first after a two-month hiatus - which his Pentagon chief said was its highest yet, signifying an expanded threat.

Mr Trump had invited top Republican and Democrat members of Congress to the White House to discuss ways to extend government funding in order to avert a government shutdown on December 9th. They begged Mr. McConnell and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, to join them in direct negotiations without the president involved.

They said: "Given that the president doesn't see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead".

"Meeting with "Chuck and Nancy" today about keeping government open and working", the tweet read.

After Trump tweeted he didn't see a possible deal with Democrats, Democratic leaders backed out of a meeting with the president.

In fact, in 2010, McConnell-then the Senate minority leader-skipped dinner with President Barack Obama in favor of a meal with the conservative Federalist Society. Or will they vote against it and shut down the government?

Republicans control both chambers of Congress, but their leaders will likely need to rely on at least some Democratic votes to pass the funding measure.

But Democrats' support for any modifications to the legislation would be conditioned on legislative protections for immigrants known as "Dreamers"(those who were brought to the United States illegally when still children and who have stayed since) while some conservative Republicans have objections.

"The president's invitation to the Democrat leaders still stands and he encourages them to put aside their pettiness, stop the political grandstanding, show up and get to work", she said.

Pelosi responded to Trump's comments on Twitter, saying that his "verbal abuse will no longer be tolerated".

Senate majority Mitch McConnell accused the two Democrats of "a lack of seriousness" about the federal government funding issue.

On December 8, the USA government will run out of money (though the deadline may be temporarily extended to later in the month). "They're weak on crime, they're weak on illegal immigration, they want the illegal folks to come pouring into our border - and a lot of problems are being caused, although we've stopped it to a large extent, as much as you can without the wall, which we're going to get". "I think that will have a huge effect on Schumer and Pelosi".

"We're not going to sit down just for a photo op", Schumer said.

"If the President reverses course and decides he wants to be a constructive force...we're happy to meet with him anytime, anywhere, anyplace", Schumer told reporters on Tuesday.
