President Donald Trump on Saturday said he is not concerned that Michael Flynn, his former national security adviser, is cooperating with a special counselor's investigation after pleading guilty to making false statements to the FBI because there was "absolutely no collusion".
Mr Flynn was the first member of Trump's administration to plead guilty to a crime uncovered by special counsel Robert Mueller's wide-ranging investigation into Russian attempts to influence the 2016 USA presidential election and possible collusion by Trump aides.
The Clinton investigation formally ended in July 2016, when then-FBI Director James Comey announced he would recommend Clinton face no charges for her use of a private email server as secretary of state.
"What has been shown is no collusion, no collusion", Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for fund-raising events in NY.
According to documents released by Mueller, Flynn lobbied Russian Federation to kill a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements at the behest of a "very senior" transition official that sources toldCNN was Jared Kushner - Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser. In court documents filed Friday, Flynn said he had conversations about those calls with officials of Trump's transition team including one senior member.
On Saturday, before departing from the South Lawn for New York, Trump addressed Flynn's admission of guilt. The key question now is what Flynn knows that could incriminate others and what he might have offered in exchange for such a lenient plea deal. This comes a day after Flynn pleaded guilty for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about contacts with Russian officials. "So we're very happy".
The cooperation of Flynn, a senior campaign official and former top adviser on national security, could lead to inside information critical to Mueller's probe.
After landing in New York City, Trump's motorcade drove near several hundred protesters decrying the tax bill and his administration's entanglement in the Russian Federation probe. Trump fired Comey on May 9.
Trump was attending three fundraising events in NY that were expected to raise $6 million for Trump Victory, a joint fundraising committee between the president's campaign and the Republican National Committee.
Flynn was booted from the White House after it became public that he misled Vice President Pence about his conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
While the mainstream media goes around in circles desperately seeking evidence of wrongdoing in the Trump administration, it turns out a scandal of major import was under their noses all along.
