The aviation notice in the area was raised from orange to red following the eruptions, prompting the temporary closure of Lombok International Airport.

The latest alert - a red warning - means an eruption is forecast to be "imminent" after nearby locals spotted volcanic ash rain.

"Tourism in Bali is still safe, except in the danger (zone) around Mount Agung", Indonesia's Disaster Mitigation Agency said in a statement.

However, according to Phys.org, while scientists believe Mount Agung will continue to smoke for up to a month or more, a similar eruption is not considered particularly likely now. A Level 3 alert has been issued by the National Agency for Disaster Management, with officials recommending no public activities taking place within 6=7.5 kilometers - 3.5 to 4.5 miles.

Authorities have told people within a 7.5km exclusion zone to "immediately evacuate" in an "orderly and calm manner". While Denpsar's airport remains operational, several (mainly Australian) airlines have already cancelled flights in and out of Denpasar.

Magma has been detected close to the surface on Mount Agung.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an area of tectonic plates that frequently collide, causing seismic and volcanic activity.

The volcano also erupted last Saturday, with ash going up 1,500m.

Volcanic eruptions on the Indonesian resort island of Bali have prompted officials to cancel flights and move about 24,000 residents out of the way as a thick ash cloud from Mount Agung, thousands of meters high, drifts east and southeast along the archipelago. About 25,000 people have been prevented from returning to their homes around the volcano since September when activity began for the first time since a 1963 eruption killed about 1,100 people.

At Ngurah Rai, Bali's main airport, flight cancellations stranded roughly 7,000 domestic and worldwide passengers, according to the airport's latest report.
