How do we negotiate?
US President Donald Trump talks to the media before he and first lady Melania Trump depart on Marine One on November 3, 2017 in Washington, DC.
Trump, being the man who he is, took the bait and threw some insults back at North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Mr Trump called the claim an "artificial barrier" put up by Democrats and once again cast doubt on the conclusion from his own intelligence agencies that Russian Federation tried to interfere in the presidential poll to ensure Hillary Clinton was defeated.
"Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me 'old, '" tweeted the president. The President of the USA then responds to this by saying he'll do all he can to prevent all out war, followed by calling his adversary "short and fat". Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend - and maybe someday that will happen!
White House chief of staff John Kelly, chatting briefly with reporters after Trump's press conference Sunday in Hanoi, was asked about the president's descriptive tweet about the North Korean leader.
"Do not underestimate us", Trump said Tuesday in a speech delivered to South Korea's National Assembly.
U.S. Pacific Fleet commander Scott Swift said the triple-carrier drill, in which Japanese and South Korean vessels will also take part, was the first in the region since 2007.
And in a warning directed at young dictator Kim, he said: "The weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer".
On Saturday, the North's Foreign Ministry responded in a statement: "Reckless remarks by an old lunatic like Trump will never scare us or stop our advance". "On the contrary, all this makes us more sure that our choice to promote economic construction at the same time as building-up on our nuclear force is all more righteous, and it pushes us to speed up the effort to complete our nuclear force".
Asked at a news conference in Vietnam if he could see himself being friends with Kim, the Trump replied: "That might be a unusual thing to happen, but it's a possibility".
On Aug. 8, Trump threatened the regime with "fire and fury like the world has never seen", leading Kim to say he would consider sending missiles into the waters off the coast of Guam in "mid-August". It could be something that could happen.
