Strong quake hits Iraq-Iran border region

An earthquake rattled the Iran Iraq border on Nov. 12 2017

Deputy Prime Minister Recep Akdağ said no destruction or damage occurred in Turkey from magnitude the natural disaster.

"Four people were killed by the earthquake" in Darbandikhan, the town's mayor Nasseh Moulla Hassan told AFP.

Iranian state TV says a 7.2-magnitude quake has jolted the region near the border between Iran and Iraq.


As a result of the natural disaster, 138 people were injured in Iran, the figure may increase, the dead data is not yet available, a source in the Iranian Red Crescent told RIA Novosti.

On its website, the USGS placed the quake's epicenter at about 19 miles south-southwest of the Iraqi city of Halabja.

Faramarz Akbari, a local official in the Iranian border city of Ghasr-e Shirin, reported the death toll to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency. In 2003, a 6.6 magnitude flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.


Tremors could be felt as far away as in the UAE after a 7.3 magnitude quake struck Northern Iraq.

Some have spoken of having felt the tremor in Kuwait.

Iranian state television said the quake which have also strong aftershocks, damaged 8 villages and cut electricity in a number of towns and villages near the quake-hit areas.


Several people posted videos of swaying light fixtures to social media.
