3 US aircraft carriers to enter waters off Korean Peninsula to stage joint drills: S.Korean military

Three US aircraft carriers to conduct drills in Asia amid North Korean crisis

South Korean naval vessels will join the U.S.in a rare military drill that will feature three USA aircraft carriers in the western Pacific later this week.

The San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt will join two other nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in a rare strike-force exercise in the Sea of Japan beginning Saturday.

North Korea has launched a stinging attack on US President Donald Trump following his visit to South Korea.

"It is a rare opportunity to train with two aircraft carriers together, and even rarer to be able to train with three", U.S. Pacific Fleet chief Adm. Scott Swift said in a statement.

Animosity between the USA and the isolated regime could increase further when the first three-aircraft carrier exercise begins on Saturday.

From the end of May to the beginning of June, the US Navy sent two aircraft carriers - the USS Ronald Reagan and the USS Carl Vinson - to the waters around the Korean Peninsula to conduct joint exercises. In recent months, U.S. Navy carriers have conducted dual-carrier strike group exercises in the Western Pacific, including in the contested South China Sea, East China Sea and Philippine Sea.

While at sea, the strike force plans to conduct air defense drills, sea surveillance, replenishment at sea, defensive air combat training, close-in coordinated maneuvers and other training. Ronald Reagan took part in VS 2006 and Nimitz took part in VS 2007.

The Ministry of National Defense (MND) on Thursday confirmed to media that this will be the first time that the ROK and the US navies stage joint bilateral drills with the three aircraft carriers in waters off the east coast of the country.

The JCS said in a statement that the exercise was seeking to strengthen and expand the dissuasive strategy to prevent Pyongyang from carrying out further provocations in the form of arms tests. It is committed to maintain the security commitments for the next 70 years, the report added.

Also on Saturday, the US and South Korean navies launched four days of joint drills off the east coast of South Korea.

He said of the North Korean threats to strike the USA and its allies, "That would be a fatal miscalculation".
