BLIZZARDStarCraft 2 is going to be free to play later this year
More than seven years after the launch of StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, Blizzard Entertainment is making the real-time strategy game free-to-play. But, gamers who already own that campaign won't be left out in the cold, because the second campaign, Heart of the Swarm, will be given to players who already own Wings of Liberty. Morhaime says Blizzard is also improving StarCraft II's co-op mode, giving players free access to every commander in the game up to level 5.
If you play through Wings of Liberty and want to see how the rest of the epic single-player saga unfolds, all the other single-player campaigns-Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and Nova Covert Ops will be available to purchase individually for $14.99 or as a bundle for $39.99.
Players who already owned any version of StarCraftII prior to October 31 will receive a special Eidolon Ghost skin and three portraits commemorating their founder's status in the game when StarCraft II goes free-to-play.
The award-winning StarCraft II:Wings of Liberty story campaign is free in its entirety. There will be some limitations to what players can access in the real-time strategy game though, including the need to purchase the title's other expansions. On top of that, Blizzard is offering gamers the chance to unlockStarCraft II's competitive multiplayer content available for free. Those with a desire for competition can unlock the ranked ladder for free simply by playing and winning games. Just be sure to log in sometime between November 8 and December 8 to claim it. The news was formally announced by Blizzard during the 2017 Blizzcon opening ceremonies. This also includes all units from the expansion campaigns.
F2P commanders can earn access the Ranked mode after earning 10 daily "First Win of the Day". Players who already own all three campaign packs will receive a special thank you in the form of an exclusive Ghost skin plus three new portraits.
