Double car bombing strikes Mogadishu

Bombs kill at least 7 in Mogadishu

A suicide lorry bomb exploded outside a popular hotel in Somalia's capital, killing at least 23 people and wounding more than 30, and gunfire continued as security forces pursued other attackers inside the building, police said.

Witnesses in some previous attacks have said al Shabab fighters disguised themselves by wearing military uniforms.

Police officer Major Abdullahi Aden told Reuters the auto bomb said: 'They are fighting inside.

Abdikadir Abdirahman, director of Mogadishu's Amin ambulance service, said 17 injured people had been carried away from the hotel blast. The dead also included a former member of parliament, he said.

"The Mujahedeen fighters are inside Nasa Hablod 2 hotel where".

He suffered small injuries on his shoulder and skull from flying glass.

A suicide auto bomber first drove into a hotel where President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo was due to host a meeting on Saturday, following by a vehicle bombing near a former parliament building.

Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow, reporting from Nairobi, Kenya, said at least three heavily armed Al-Shabab gunmen have gained entry to the Nasa-Hablod hotel and that fighting was still going on.

"We can hear the gunfire but it is hard to know who is fighting, the forces cordoned off the building and no one can go close to it", said Abdulahi Nure.

Bombs in Mogadishu two weeks ago killed at least 358 people, the worst such attacks in the country's history, igniting nationwide outrage.

Al-Shabab often targets high-profile areas of Mogadishu.

The United States under President Trump has made a renewed push to defeat the Shabab, Somali-based militants who have terrorized the country and East Africa for years, killing civilians across borders, worsening starvation and destabilizing a broad stretch of the region.

'It is a busy hotel frequented by lawmakers, (military) forces and civilians'.

The US has been actively involving in trying to combat the group, launching 20 drone strikes.
