The Lincoln Parish Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation.
Police say the shooting began as "an altercation that started inside one of the dorm rooms and spilled out into the courtyard".
Sheriff Mike Stone said in a statement that the suspect and victims knew each other "to some extent" and stressed that the shooting wasn't random or an act of terrorism.
Those shot dead were Earl Andrews, 23, and Monquiarius Caldwell, 23, while the perpetrator, an unknown individual, fled the scene, the news outlet specified. Caldwell was not enrolled at the school, Sutton said. Both men were 23 years old and from Farmerville, Louisiana.
