Veteran south Indian film director IV Sasi dead

IV Sasi

Acclaimed Malayalam film director IV Sasi died in Chennai on Tuesday. He was ailing for sometime.

Sasi continued to work individually with both Mammootty and Mohanlal and most of these films went on to become superhits. He is known in South Indian films of late 70s, 80s, 90s primarily of Malayalam and Tamil films. He directed more than 150 movies in Malayalam but he was known to Telugu audiences for his Megastar Chiranjeevi and Rajinikanth starrer "Kaali" (1980). In Hindi, he directed films like Karishmaa which starred Kamal Haasan, Reena Roy, Tina Munim among others and released in 1984.

Listening to a well narrated book is an incredible experience. The two superstars also acted together in a dozen of Sasi's films. He even served as the festival director of the second edition All Lights India International Film Festival, which was held at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. He started his career as an art director for Kaliyalla kalyanam (1968), Sasi made his directorial debut with Utsavam (1975). In the year 1984, Sasi gave Mammootty some of his best films in Aalkkoottathil Thaniye, Aksharangal (both written by MT) and Kanamarayathu (written by Padmarajan) that are considered to be among the finest films made in Malayalam.

In real life, however, IV Sasi's romance and marriage to Seema has a warm place in the hearts of their industry friends, many of whom have expressed shock at IV Sasi's demise and extended their solidarity to Seema, a powerhouse of talent herself. "The industry and I mourn a great technician".

Born in 1948, he married yesteryear actress Seema whom he met on the sets of his movie "Avalude Raavukkal". He also directed Kamal Haasan in Eeta.

Most importantly, he worked with four superstars when they were all budding actors - Kamal Haasan, Rajnikanth, Mammooty and Mohanlal. Sasi's last commercial success was also with Mohanlal in 1997 (Varnappakittu) written by Babu Janardhanan.
