Warrant Obtained For Deandre Harris, Black Man Filmed Beaten In Charlottesville Riot
Deandre Harris was participating in a counterprotest to the white nationalists' "Unite the Right" rally in August when a clash broke out in a parking garage near the University of Virginia campus.
Deandre Harris, a 20-year-old black man who was viciously attacked by white supremacists at the Charlottesville, Va. white supremacist rally nearly two months ago is now a wanted man after a local magistrateissued a warrant for his arrest in connection to the same August 12 incident that left him bloody and wounded.
DeAndre Harris, 20, was charged with unlawful wounding in the August 12 rally that turned violent.
What happened to Harris that day in Charlottesville quickly went viral on social media after photos captured by journalist Zach D. Roberts, showing Harris being beaten with poles by the group of thugs quickly went viral. "We find it highly offensive and upsetting, but what's more jarring is that he's been charged with the same crime as the men who attacked him", Merritt said. The magistrate contacted police, Upman says, who verified facts and issued the warrant for unlawful wounding. The magistrate issued the warrant Monday after consulting with police.
Merritt is adamant that his client was not the antagonist in the incident and noted that Harris has plans to turn himself in to the police in the days to come. He said the attackers also broke his wrist, chipped his tooth and split open his lip.
Harris has said the attack left him with a concussion, a gash on his head that required almost a dozen staples, and other injuries.
