Tropical depression forms in SW Caribbean, heads toward Gulf of Mexico

New tropical depression forms with Georgia in its crosshairs

The storm, which is still a tropical storm as of the National Hurricane Center's 2 p.m. advisory Thursday morning, is expected to head toward the USA this weekend.

The center of the storm is expected to move across northeastern Nicaragua and eastern Honduras today and then over the northwestern Caribbean Sea tonight and Friday.

The NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) has put Nate on track to make landfall on the the Gulf Coast at 8am on Sunday.

As of Wednesday morning a broad area of low pressure is located in the western Caribbean Sea, not far from the coast of Central America.

There's consistency in model data that leads us to believe this system (whether it becomes Tropical Storm Nate or Hurricane Nate) will NOT impact Texas at this time.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for parts of Mexico including the popular tourist resort CancĂșn, and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Nicaragua, Honduras and other areas of Mexico.

A tropical depression is seen from space in 2014 in this photo from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Residents of the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida were advised to monitor the storm.

Nate is expected to remain a tropical depression as it moves through the Appalachian region Tuesday.

After a brief pause in tropical activity, another system formed Wednesday in the Caribbean and will likely become Tropical Storm Nate, according to the National Hurricane Center. The current timing of these impacts will be late Saturday through Monday afternoon. The Euro strengthens the system more and predicts a Sunday night landfall near Pensacola, Florida.

Forecast models are not much help solving the details for right now.
