Canada's renewable energy growth projections scaled back after Ontario scraps clean energy program: Report

NRDC Report: Clean Energy Revolution Shatters Records & Projections

Nearly 165GW of new renewable power was installed in 2016, driven by 74GW of solar photovoltaic capacity coming online, according to a new report by the International Energy Agency (IEA).

"Dozens of clean energy records have been shattered across the United States in the a year ago and a half", said co-author Ralph Cavanagh, co-director of NRDC's energy program.

"We expect that solar PV capacity growth will be higher than any other renewable technology through 2022."According to the IEA's report on Wednesday, renewables accounted for almost two-thirds of net new power capacity in 2016".

This higher forecast is because of increase in predictions of China and India's solar PV additions.

China remains the undisputed leader of renewable electricity capacity expansion during the forecast period with more than 360 GW of capacity coming online, or 40 per cent of the global total.

A new video by the International Energy Agency shows how the renewables market will develop and expand over the next several years.

Specifically, the EIA predicted that the country's solar energy capacity would only increase by less than 1 GW (gigawatt) - a blindingly baffling prediction, not simply because the end result was actually 46-times the forecast figure. The price is half what new wind farms were built for just two years ago, and means off shore wind power will be cheaper than nuclear energy in the United Kingdom for the first time.

The agency sees renewable power generation rising by more than a third to 8,169 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2022 - from around 6,012 TWh in 2016 - which is equivalent to the combined electricity consumption of China, India and Germany. With strong support from China, which accounted for almost half of this total, solar photovoltaic growth was faster than any fuel worldwide - passing net growth in coal as the graph below shows. Over the next half decade, the world will install half as much renewable energy as the current entire global capacity of coal power.

He added that the current generation is experiencing the birth of new era in solar PV. "We expect that solar photovoltaic capacity growth will be higher than any other renewable technology through 2022". And for the first time in USA history, wind and solar energy made up more than 10 percent of all monthly electricity generation.

Although coal will still be the largest source of electricity generation in 2022, renewables is on track to close the generation gap with coal by half in just five years.
