Paul George Russell Westbrook's mega-contract could impact his decision on future

Westbrook signed a five-year, $205 million extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder making him the highest paid player in the association with the biggest guaranteed contract in NBA history.

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed the deal.

Westbrook's contract extension is the largest in National Basketball Association history-worth $235 million over six seasons-according to ESPN.

Westbrook waited months to sign this contract, and he chose to close the deal on Kevin Durant's birthday. With Russ back in the fold, the team can now try and work their magic on keeping Paul George and Carmelo Anthony for longer than one season as they try to bring an elusive title to Oklahoma. Oklahoma City is where Westbrook wants to play professional basketball, not Los Angeles.

But Anthony will be 34 in May and likely won't command more than that per season in free agency. Soon after, Westbrook agreed to a contract extension through 2018-19 season, with the final season being a player option.

The Thunder acquired Westbrook, a UCLA standout, with the No. 4 overall pick at the 2018 NBA Draft.

Once again, at a crossroads that signified a huge moment in his career and the Thunder's trajectory, Russell Westbrook locked in with the organization and signed a long-term contract to stay in OKC.

Westbrook couldn't have picked a better time to agree to such a historic deal, as he is just a season removed from his historic 2016-17 outing.

When Durant bolted for Golden State, Westbrook became the man in Oklahoma City. Westbrook averaged a triple-double last season and was the league scoring champion, averaging 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists. Oklahoma City is not a small market and typically has trouble attracting top free agents. By the age that Westbrook will be the end of his extension, they had declined to an average of 9.0 WARP - a little bit shy of what typically merits an All-Star selection. He also stated previous year that Westbrook reminds him of his younger self, since he feels that he still has so much more to prove for the rest of his career.
