Lashkar-e-Islam chief Qayoom Najar with Rs 10 lakh bounty killed in Uri

Uri: Top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Abdul Qayoom Najar alias Jansahib has been killed during Uri encounter while he was trying to infiltrate into the valley.

A police spokesman said Najar who had been active since 1999 had split from the Hizbul Mujahideen to form his own group Lashkar-e-Islam after a falling out in 2015. Najar could have been the biggest challenge for security forces as he had the ability to revive militancy not only in north Kashmir but in the entire Valley, police officials said. Najar was also reportedly unhappy as the Hizb high command had shifted focus to cadres operating in Tral instead of his cadres operating in north Kashmir.

He briefly fell out with the Hizbul and the Hurriyat leadership in 2015 when he orchestrated multiple attacks on mobile towers and killed some civilians affiliated with the Hurriyat.

A complete shutdown was observed in Sopore, the hometown of Najar, where reports said normal life was completely disrupted.

Earlier, Army chief general Bipin Rawat said on Monday that surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) could be repeated, if necessary, seeking to send a stern message to Pakistan. After that, he was recalled to the base camp in Muzaffarabad in September 2015 where he stayed with Syed Sallahudin. So, had this gentleman made entry into north Kashmir, it would have been a problem for us.

He was arrested in 1992 and later released. However, he shot to prominence after carrying out a series of attacks against telecom operators in Sopore town, accusing them of spying on militants for security agencies and forcing them to shut down their operations. Neutralising him would have been very hard as he was already heading a huge network in Sopore, Palhallan, Pattan, Handwara areas of Bandipora and Baramulla.

However A complete shutdown is being observed in sopore belt of on wednesday to mourn the death of local militant, authorities shuts all educational institues in district baramulla on Wednesday as a precautionary measures to maintain law and order following the killing of slain Abdul Qayoom Najar.
