Israel says Interpol acceptance harms peace

Palestine Joins Interpol, Despite Israeli Opposition

China's President Xi Jinping speaks during the 86th Interpol General Assembly at the Beijing National Convention Center in Beijing

Interpol, the global police organization, has voted to accept Palestine as a member country - which will heighten fears in Israel that Palestine could use Interpol to target Israeli officials.

The Palestine Liberation Organisation said on Twitter that more than three-quarters of member states had voted in the secret ballot in favour of Palestinian membership.

Interpol on Wednesday approved an application by the Palestinian Authority to join the global police organisation despite Israel's staunch opposition.

Last November, Israel successfully thwarted a Palestinian attempt to become full members of Interpol, the world's largest worldwide police organization.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry, which opposed membership of Palestine, demanded that vote be postponed for at least one year.

"On this joyous occasion, the State of Palestine reiterates its commitment to upholding its obligations and contributing to fighting crime and furthering the rule of law".

Seventy-five countries voted in favor during an Interpol meeting in Beijing, with 24 opposing and 34 abstentions. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak called it "another failure" for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It also raised concerns that the Palestinians might use their elevated status to seek the arrests of Israelis, though Palestinian officials said there were no immediate plans to do so.

PA Deputy Foreign Minister Tayseer Jaradat on Monday told The Jerusalem Post that Israel's opposition to the Palestinians joining Interpol is "unreasonable".

About 300 Palestinians - majority assailants, Israel says - have also been killed in that period, according to AFP news agency.

Cardin said any "red notices" issued by the Palestinians "will not be recognized in many countries, including the United States".

In a statement, Interpol said red notices are not worldwide arrest warrants, but rather act as an alert to member countries, and are issued based on a valid national arrest warrant.

The Palestinians needed the support of at least two-thirds of the member countries to be accepted.

A page on the Interpol website listed Palestine as a member since 27 September 2017.

"The Interpol General Assembly has also adopted a resolution interpreting Article 4 of the Constitution which governs the criteria under which countries can apply for membership of the Organization in the future", the agency said.
