Iran tests new medium-range missile in defiance of United States warnings

24 September 2017, 12:27 | Simon Arnold

"We will increase our military power as a deterrent".

In a rejoinder to Trump's call to renegotiate the nuclear deal, he said that "all countries" at the General Assembly meeting supported the nuclear deal, "except the United States and the Zionist regime", a reference to Israel.

After praising Donald Trump's address earlier in the day from the same podium, in which the USA president called the Islamic Republic a "murderous" regime and the nuclear deal an "embarrassment", Netanyahu said the 2015 accord strengthened Iran's nuclear program and posed a grave threat to the entire world.

Iran has "successfully" launched a ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 km, Press TV reported on Saturday.

The timing of the test was not disclosed by the broadcaster, although officials had said yesterday that it would be tested "soon". We will not seek anyone's permission to defend our land.

Rouhani said the United States and Israel have isolated themselves by opposing the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the other major powers.

Iran also displayed other home-made advanced missiles, including ballistic missiles, which are reported to have ranges of 1,300 km to 2,000 km. It is unclear when the test took place.

Trump has threatened to trash the nuclear agreement, saying Iran is developing missiles that might be used to deliver a nuclear warhead when the deal's restrictions are lifted in 2025.

Fitzpatrick agrees it would be a good idea to extend the Iran nuclear deal to include ballistic missiles.

The missile, named after Iran's southwestern city of Khorramshahr, is capable of carrying multiple warheads, said Commander of the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Lieutenant General Amir Ali Hajizadeh. Netanyahu vowed to fight what he described as "an Iranian curtain" descending on the Middle East, and pledged to prevent Iran from producing any weapons that could hit Israel.

The Iranian president also reaffirmed his country's commitment to the nuclear deal. On Wednesday, he said he has made a decision on whether the USA will continue to abide by the deal, but he declined to elaborate.

Under the pact, Tehran agreed to restrict its nuclear programme in return for the lifting of economic sanctions.
