Leishman then made gains at the eighth, 13th and 18th to extend his advantage to five shots.

"The game's feeling really good", Leishman told the PGA website.

A BMW victory would move him to fourth on the FedEx Cup points list going into next week's Tour Championship. Very easy to throw a mediocre round in there.

"My ball-striking was probably close to the best it's ever been right now", he said, "so hopefully I can keep going and make a few more putts". Should Leishman go on to win the BMW Championship, he would join five players who have won this this event in wire-towire (no ties) fashion.

It was a big day for more than just the 29-year-old Australian on Friday. Marc Leishman still at 21 under.

Day was just two-under for the day heading to the par-five 14th, but chipped in for eagle to ignite what would prove to be a stunning finish.

Round two did not fare much better for Rory McIlroy, whose hopes of earning the chance to retain his FedEx Cup title faded further as he languished one under par in joint 50th place.

World number nine Day aced the 189-yard par-three 17th at Conway Farms in Chicago en route to a 6-under-par 65.

The largest margin of victory in a FedExCup Playoffs event is eight strokes, which Tiger Woods accomplished twice (2007 TOUR Championship, 2009 BMW Championship).

The 33-year-old had a mixed front nine with three birdies and two bogeys before the turn, but having picked up another shot at the par-four 13th, he birdied the last to remain on course for a third PGA Tour win. Others included in that mix are Scott Brown, Ryan Moore, Charley Hoffman, Chez Reavie and Matt Kuchar - who each shot a 67 on Saturday - and Patrick Cantlay (70).

But with his sizzling round at Conway Farms he stole the spotlight from Jordan Spieth, who leads the playoff standings and played alongside Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson - who are right behind Spieth in the race for the $10 million playoff series bonus.

"Yeah, I can't wait to get out there for these last two rounds".

Lovemark completed a blemish-free card with a final-hole eagle to make it a trio on seven under, while Fowler racked up six consecutive birdies from the 12th - including a 65-footer at the 17th.
