Forecasters said metro Atlanta could expect peak winds of 30-40 miles per hour (50 to 65 kph) and gusts up to 55 miles per hour (90 kph) on Monday, with a likelihood of falling limbs and trees blocking roadways and snapping power lines.

Power outages from Hurricane Irma dropped to over 6.6 million in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama by late Tuesday morning from nearly 6.8 million earlier in the day, according to local utilities.

Jose passed north of the Caribbean islands and Puerto Rico on Sunday as a Category 4 hurricane.

There is still the threat of of tropical storm force winds, flooding rains and tornadoes, even though the storm is expected to track well to the west of the state. "You will not survive all this storm surge".

Irma, which was expected to cause billions of dollars in damage to the third-most-populous U.S. state, it hit just days after the Houston area was deluged by unprecedented flooding from Hurricane Harvey, which dumped more than 127cm of rain in parts of Texas.

Recently planted palm trees lie strewn across the road as Hurricane Irma passes by, Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017, in Miami Beach, Fla.

"The center of Irma will move near the northwestern coast of the Florida Peninsula this morning, cross the eastern Florida Panhandle into southern Georgia this afternoon, and move through southwestern Georgia and eastern Alabama tonight and Tuesday", the National Weather Service predicts.

The storm also caused destruction when it swept across Georgia and SC on Monday.

The National Weather Service has told TMZ that the surge of water in Miami has gotten as high as 6 feet in some parts. "So on Monday, not only are we expecting windy conditions, probably sustained winds of 30, maybe 40 miles an hour with higher gusts".

The Atlantic hurricane season lasts until November 30.

Although Miami is likely to escape a direct strike from Irma, the hurricane is tracking up Florida's west coast, it has still faced extensive damage. Scott flew over the Keys and says he saw a lot of flood damage and boats that had washed ashore.

President Donald Trump on Sunday approved a major disaster designation for the state of Florida, making full federal assistance available for emergencies as well as when the eventual hard work of recovery begins. "It's terrible what we saw". So power outages are still possible in SC.
