The cold-blooded murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru unleashed outrage across the country today even as the Karnataka government quickly set up an IGP-headed Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the killing.

Gadkari sought to put the onus of maintaining law and order on the Congress government in Karnataka. "It is a fight of not just these four families but the entire society as these incidents show that the entire democratic system of the country is in danger", he said.

One of India's most prominent journalists was shot dead on Tuesday by unidentified attackers at her home in the city of Bangalaru.

As the body was laid to rest in the Lingayat burial ground in the crematorium, slogans like "Gauri Lankesh amar rahe" and "Gauri Lankesh zindabad" rent the air.

Ram Prasad Ambedkar, president of Margherita Journalists Association, said that Gauri Lankesh's death was an enormous loss to the society, nation and entire media fraternity. "It is a sad reminder of danger the journalists facing from anti progressive forces", he said. "We want the forces who were allegedly troubling her to be probed", said Dharmendra Jore, secretary, Press Club of Mumbai. Journalists took out a march from the Press Club to the Vidhana Soudha, the State secretariat, and submitted a memorandum to Siddaramaiah, seeking immediate action to bring the culprits to book.

"The murder coming even as the perpetrators of other political killings - M.M Kalburgi, Govind Pansare and Narendra Dabholkar - continue to evade justice embolden and send signals that such killings can go ahead with impunity".
