BRICS declaration condemns Pak-based terror groups: Are Indians celebrating far too much?

BRICS declaration names Pakistan terror groups in big diplomatic win for India

Pakistan on Tuesday rejected a statement by the five emerging-market BRICS powers that militant groups in Pakistan pose a regional security concern, with its defence minister saying no group operates freely inside Pakistan.

During the visit, the foreign minister will hold meetings with China's State Councillor for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The two sides, the statement added, would review bilateral relations and regional developments, including the situation in Afghanistan.

It noted that while the presence of India in the bloc "clearly influenced the language of the declaration in implicitly pointing towards Pakistan, but China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa will only have added their voices to the growing chorus of concern because of genuine considerations of their own".

The remarks by Defense Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan came days after U.S. President Donald Trump singled out Pakistan for harboring terrorist organizations, including the Taliban and Haqqani network, which destabilize Afghanistan and plot attacks on American troops there.

The declaration was passed by the member countries at the BRICS summit in China.

"We deplore all terrorist attacks worldwide, including attacks in BRICS countries, and condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations wherever committed and by whomsoever and stress that there can be no justification whatsoever for any act of terrorism".

The BRICS nations, condemned terror in a strongly-worded declaration.

Officials said the word "TTP" was used in the declaration on the insistence of China to keep the word "Pakistan" out. The BRICS declaration in the Chinese city Xiamen was significant given that China previously repeatedly stonewalled any reference to Pakistan or terrorist groups based there.

"It is beyond my understanding how China agreed to this". A range of punitive measures reportedly is being considered, though, such as increasing diplomatic and economic pressure, and intensifying and expanding anti-terrorism drone strikes inside Pakistan. "I feel little unusual", he said.

There was no safe haven for terrorists here, he said.

"China is also a victim of terrorism and is firmly against any kind of terrorism, and that's the main reason that the organisations are named in the declaration", Hu said.

Meanwhile, Asif, in an interview with a private TV channel, acknowledged the existence of some internationally banned organistations operating from within Pakistan and called for imposing restrictions on the activities of those outfits.

"In the future, sharing intelligence, building a drill mechanism and normalising these actions are the methods that the BRICS should refer to on counter-terrorism cooperation", Hu said.
