Hundreds of firefighters battled flames that devoured almost 20 kilometres of brush-covered mountains as authorities issued evacuation orders for more than 700 homes in Los Angeles, Burbank and Glendale.
He explained that the blaze was originally described as being a topography fire, because flames are running through steep terrain and narrow canyon roads, but erratic winds caused it to switch directions and start burning toward the Burbank area.
Transition roads were also closed from the eastbound 118 Freeway to the eastbound 210 Freeway, the northbound 2 Freeway to the westbound 210 Freeway, the northbound 2 Freeway at the Ventura (134) Freeway and the eastbound and westbound 134 Freeway to the northbound 2 Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Fire units from Los Angeles County, Angeles National Forest, Glendale and Burbank were on hand to assist with the air and ground fire attack and structure protection.
"Our priority is saving people, saving property", Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas said.
