Indian PM leaves for BRICS Summit in China

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks during a UN Security Council emergency meeting over North Korea's latest missile launch

Xiamen - President Jacob Zuma has arrived in Xiamen City in China to attend the 9th Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (Brics) summit to be hosted by China from September 3 to 5, the presidency said on Saturday.

Modi is likely to have a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the summit, which comes shortly after a period of increased tension following a two-and-half month long standoff between their forces in Doklam, along the Sikkim border, and a scuffle between their troops in Ladakh on August 15. "We are looking at the summit very positively, so as to come out with a strong outcome, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is looking forward to participate in this summit", Saran said.

Xi and Modi last met bilaterally during June's Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.

He added leaders from five other emerging markets and developing countries -Egypt, Guinea, Mexico, Tajikistan and Thailand -would attend the Dialogue of Emerging Markets and Developing Countries during the summit and engage in dialogue with the BRICS members.

BRICS is an worldwide platform comprising emerging economies for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. "I don't think this is an appropriate topic to be discussed at BRICS summit", said Hua Chunying, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, at a briefing last week.

"I am convinced that as long as we take a holistic approach to fighting terrorism in all its forms, and address both its symptoms and root causes, terrorists will have no place to hide,"Xi said while delivering a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the BRICS Business Forum scheduled for September 3-4 in the south-eastern coastal city of Xiamen".

"India attaches high importance to BRICS, which has begun a 2nd decade of its partnership for progress and peace", he tweeted.

Modi took to social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, to talk about his visit to China.

He hoped his visit will help in charting a roadmap for closer cooperation between the two countries.

"The development of emerging market and developing countries won't touch anyone's cheese, but instead will diligently grow the world economic pie", he said.

Both sides will also explore new areas of cooperation, the statement said.

Modi might raise Pakistan's terror links at the event.

The prime minister will meet President U Htin Kyaw and hold talks with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. "BRICS must speak in one voice against this threat", said Modi.
