"Tickets ... went on sale Wednesday morning, but within minutes, the coveted seats were all snapped up, and being resold on Stubhub at exorbitant prices", noted the New York Daily News.

Tickets for Bruce Springsteen's Springsteen on Broadway show are going for thousands of dollars on resale websites despite Ticketmaster's best efforts to prevent such activity.

The 67-year-old "Born in the USA" songwriter had hoped to root out scalpers - who are endemic at high-profile shows - by embracing a new fan verification program of ticket giant Ticketmaster.

Not all fans who register are guaranteed a code, and not all who receive a code are guaranteed tickets - it works on a first come, first served basis.

"But wait @Ticketmaster thought the #SpringsteenBroadway #VerifiedFan tickets were supposed to go to real fans." one Twitter user wrote.

The presale for the next batch of Springsteen tickets will take place next Thursday, September 7 at 10:00 AM ET. Ticketmaster calls it Verified Fan. "Across more than 50 tours so far, we've seen less than five per cent of the tickets sold distributed over the secondary market".

3 ahead of an October 12 opening at the intimate 960-seat Walter Kerr Theatre. The newly added shows are December 5-9, Dec. 12-16, December 19-23 Dec. 23-27, December 30-31 and February 1-3.

When it was announced that Bruce Springsteen would be heading to the Great White Way for a limited-run series of performances on Broadway, fans were overjoyed.
