Dead birds, plenty of mosquitoes indicate West Nile virus will stick around awhile

Public Health Madison and Dane County said on Wednesday there's been a spike in reports of dead birds throughout Dane County, and high mosquito activity.

The Wisconsin Division of Public Health will continue surveillance for West Nile virus until the end of the mosquito season.

Two Guelph area residents have tested positive for West Nile virus. That includes three in Waterloo region, three in Guelph and six in Perth County.

"Everything does clear up, but it's not a fun illness to have".

"The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury has historically been identified as an area with increased risk for the virus", the health unit wrote in a news release.

West Nile virus is most commonly spread to humans by mosquito bites.

To protect yourself from West Nile virus, officials recommend wearing light-coloured trousers and a long-sleeved shirt when outside. Some infected people will experience flu-like symptoms.

Zentner said people should be extra cautious at this time of year, because a recent report out of Brock University looking at West Nile virus in the province over a 12-year period found this is the time of year many cases get reported. In 2006, 4,269 confirmed human WNV cases were reported nationally to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; California reported 278 cases.
