Google launches ARCore SDK in preview: AR on Android phones, no extra hardware required
The launch of ARCore comes after Appleannounced in June the launch of ARKit, allowing developers to build AR experiences for iPhones and iPads.
Google introduced on Tuesday a preview of its latest software development kit (SDK):ARCore. With this, the company also released prototype browsers for web developers so they can experiment with AR. In order to make their AR system famous, they would have to ask their phone makers to use certain parts because it may be impossible for them to account for a variety of Android phone cameras.
Note:ARCore is being offered as an early preview so that you can start experimenting with building new AR experiences.
Google assures their Android customers that they will be working with manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Sony, Huawei, Asus and many other to bring their ARCore available for millions of devices and users across the globe.
Google announced a new entry to its ever-growing portfolio of immersive technology.
Google also says it is working "Visual Positioning Service (VPS), a service which will enable world scale AR experiences well beyond a tabletop".
ARCore is the answer to Apple's ARKit, which was used by Dunkin Donuts when they chose to cause a solar eclipse with a donut hole.
Like Tango, ARCore is able to capture environmental information with a phone's camera to insert believable, interactive graphics and animations into the real world.
As with both Tango and Daydream, however, device compatibility will be limited compared to the existing base of Android users (more than 1 billion). Your phone's camera will make sure "virtual objects remain accurately placed", Burke says, while "ARCore can detect horizontal surfaces using the same feature points it uses for motion tracking" for objects on a floor or table. Now, with Apple's plans to focus on AR with the upcoming iPhone 8, Google knows these baby steps won't get it anywhere.
Augmented Reality (AR) as an endeavour is set to explode on to the scene following initial successes, most notably the release of Pokémon Go previous year that led people to go to some extreme places with their phones to catch a digital creature.
