Med Beat: Donors sought to build blood supplies

Blood shortage hits the Central Coast after the holiday weekend

The United Blood Services is calling on the community to come forward and give blood in an effort to rebuild both local and national blood supplies in addition to preparing for any unexpected events which could cause an increase in the need for blood.

Blood banks across the country are scrambling to recruit donors to fill a deficit in blood supplies following the 4th of July holiday weekend.

For example, the current O-negative, the universal blood type, blood supply is about two days or half of the ideal quantity needed to support patient needs. United Blood Services is receiving almost 6,000 donations less than needed this month alone. Los Alamos residents have the chance to do just that by joining in the 2nd Annual Battle of the Badges community blood drive noon to 6 p.m. August 3 and 10 4 p.m. August 4 in the hall at First Baptist Church, 2200 Diamond Los Alamos. Additionally, numerous of blood drives are scheduled for the upcoming weeks. "But only about 10 percent of area residents donate blood". This network works in tandem, moving lifesaving donations throughout the system to help ensure blood is available when and where it's needed most.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health to donate blood.

Walk-ins are welcome at Virginia Blood Services donor center at 131 Electric Road in Salem.
