USA congressman Steve Scalise still critical after Washington shooting

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise remains in critical condition Friday, days after a shooting at an early-morning baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

"Congressman Steve Scalise is in serious condition", the statement from MedStar Washington Hospital said.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update Saturday on behalf of the Scalise family. The hospital's chief trauma doctor has said Scalise faced "an imminent risk of death" at the time he was brought in.

Sava said that doctors on Thursday had operated on him to fix the broken bone. But he will remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time" and faces additional operations.

The president spoke about the 51-year-old from Louisiana again Friday during a speech in Miami. Hodgkinson was shot by police and died of his injuries.

Scalise continues to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington.

Scalise is being treated in the hospital's intensive care unit.

The bullet that had hit Scalise was a single rifle round that "travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding".

Even though Scalise is quite alive, now under treatment for injuries sustained at the shooting, Pelosi seems to begin to say "death", while talking to reporters at Capitol Hill on Thursday.

"I am sickened by this despicable act", Sanders said in a statement condemning all acts of violence. Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were also injured during the incident.

Brooks tells CNN that he was contacted by Capitol Police and told his name and office number were on the list. He remains in critical condition.

Bailey received a hero's welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday's game when he threw out the first pitch.
