Kershaw becomes second-quickest pitcher to reach 2000 strikeouts

04 June 2017, 06:15 | Erin Grant

Chris Taylor hit a grand slam in the ninth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 10-8 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday at Miller Park.

Coming into Friday night's game, Kershaw needed four strikeouts to reach 2,000. Kershaw gave up just two hits in all and the only damage was a solo homer off the bat of Domingo Santana in his final inning of work.

In 2015, Kershaw became the first pitcher to strikeout 300 batters in a season since Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling accomplished the feat in 2002. The 37-year-old has worked five frames or fewer in each of his three starts since being sidelined one month due to a recurrence of blister issues.

The combined 42 strikeouts set a National League record. Yasmani Grandal had tied the game with one out in the ninth by lining a 3-1 fastball from closer Corey Knebel over the wall in right-center.

"It will be cool someday, I guess when you retire you look back at that stuff", Kershaw said about the milestone. It was certainly a major improvement over his outing against the Cards last week when he walked seven batters. He's coming down from a season in which he posted a 1.69 ERA, the lowest of his career, paired with an 0.7 BB/9 and 10.4 SO/9 over 149 innings. Matt Garza will get the ball for the Brewers, while the Dodgers will counter with lefty Rich Hill.

The Dodgers acquired LHP Jason Wheeler from the Minnesota Twins for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Garza is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in two career starts against Los Angeles, with the loss occurring last season at Dodger Stadium.
