ICE Arrests Up By 34.5 Percent During Trump's First 100 Days

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Fugitive Operations officers make an arrest during a five-day expanded enforcement operation targeting at-large criminal aliens illegal re-entrants and immigration fugitives

"Operations like this are emblematic of the vital work ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers do every day seeking to locate, arrest, and ultimately deport at-large convicted criminals and other immigration fugitives who pose a threat to public safety", David Marin, field officer director for ERO in Los Angeles, said in a statement.

More than 180 people were arrested over the 10-day multi-state operation, which was spread across West Virginia, Pennsylvania and DE, according to a release from ICE.

Los Angeles proper carried the most arrests of any city where ICE officers apprehended, with 26 instances.

But offenses of those taken into custody in the Southern California operation ranged from rape and manslaughter to burglary and obstructing justice.

"All we believe are deportable", said Virginia Kice, spokesperson with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), "including eight who had been previously removed".

"Of those arrested during the operation ..." "They weren't people who just had traffic tickets or speeding violations".

Arrests were made in the counties of Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, Ventura and Santa Barbara. They are mostly men, and the majority, 146 people, are from Mexico, while others came from El Salvador, Guatemala, Armenia, Honduras, Russia, Thailand, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Cambodia and the Philippines, according to ICE.

According to ICE, almost 90 percent of those arrested had prior criminal convictions, with the largest portion having drug offenses.

The raids took place amid a surge in such operations since President Donald Trump took office in January vowing to deport as many as three million undocumented immigrants with criminal records.

Instead, ICE agents use targeting methods and know who they want to arrest ahead of time.

Immigration arrests since the beginning of the year have risen nearly 40% nationwide compared to the same period in 2016.

Under President Barack Obama's administration, ICE was not allowed to arrest or target certain groups of people, Marin said. "This administration has made clear we are a nation of immigrants but we are also a nation of laws".

Plascencia says she was arrested in March on a bench warrant for failing to testify in a 2007 case.

A U.S. law enforcement source in Mexico said U.S. Marshals were involved in their arrest. “Hes been a valued member of his family and community for decades and they seem to be going after people for a conviction thats as old as 1992.”.

The arrest by ICE agents of Abdi Ali, a Somali refugee and permanent resident of the US inside a courthouse in Portland was "very troubling", she said. Homeland Security databases indicated the man arrested in Los Angeles was deported in 2013 after serving a nine-year prison term, but returned to the United States illegally.
